Doctors come to an agreement and return to work

14. December, 2011

On November 28th, Slovakia has declared a state of emergency in several hospitals after thousands of doctors resigned from public hospitals over low pay.

More than 2,000 doctors in state-run hospitals have handed in their resignations, effective of  December 1st, if their demands for higher salaries were not met.

On December 14th, after numerous protests and 2 day debates between the government and the union representing physicians, all but one of the agreements was approved.

The amendment guarantees the doctors up to three salary increases over the next year, which means a raise to as much as 2.3 times the average salary in Slovakia by January 2013.
