Hungarian president Pál Schmitt tenders his resignation

2. April, 2012

President Pál Schmitt has given his resignation to the parliament after being stripped of his doctorate. Budapest’s Semmelweis Medical University has declared that the president’s dissertation was up to 90 percent copied from works of other academics.
Pál Schmitt was elected in 2010 by the Christian Democrat alliance and was personally backed by the Prime Minister Orbán.
The first reaction of the president to the accusation of plagiarism was defensive, blaming university examiners for his predicament. But after numerous pressures from the left and right opposition parties, Pál Schmitt has officially announced about his decision to step down from the position of president of Hungary.
